Over the last several years the Joint Commission process has changed. Surveys are now unannounced. And hospitals can no longer count on being surveyed in the third year after their last review. Surveys are no longer scored. There is no final grid score, however, each element of performance is scored and that determines the standard score. The number of Recommendations for Improvement will determine the survey outcome.

In the future, supplemental recommendations will also determine the survey outcome. This is a most critical time for hospitals to understand and react to these important changes.
